The Chevron Scrape Bassoon Reed is constructed from tube cane that has been hand-selected for quality and symmetry. Blanks are tip-profiled and a first day scrape is performed to ensure a consistent starting point and to encourage vibration. From this point, the reeds are tested and adjusted gradually over several sessions until playing characteristics stabilize.

This style of scrape offers more stability in tone and pitch than the Traditional style. It may also feel "darker" or more "blending" depending on your setup and situation. Choice of shape will also affect these characteristics greatly. Send us a message to request recommendations for your specific needs!

This reed style is especially popular among woodwind doublers due to the ease of producing a "warm" tone.

This style of scrape is based on my interpretation of reeds made by my teacher, Ted Soluri. He studied with Jeff Keesecker and David McGill, and this reed style has been influenced by them. I have also taken from my own knowledge and experimentation as well as research into Tabuteau/Mack style oboe reeds among other resources.

Some minimal scraping and wire adjustments may be necessary for your playing preferences, please reach out with any questions about doing so here.

Current Tip Profiler: ReedsnStuff with a GR5 template. GR template is also available upon request. Note: For this style of reed, the tip profile is left intentionally thick so that there is enough material left for filing in the "chevron" tip.

Dimensions

All dimensions may vary slightly on finished product due to the hand work involved. Some customization may be honored on a case-by-case basis, please leave requests in the comment box at checkout.

Total length: 54-56mm*

*This variance is dependent on shape and characteristics of the cane.

Tube length: 28mm

Blade length: 26-28mm*

*This variance is dependent on shape and characteristics of the cane, specific requests may be honored.

Thickness at back: .75-1.0m*

*This variance is due to adjustments made based on playing characteristics of the reed. Some reeds function better with a "flatter" profile, and others with a "steeper" profile. Requests for a specific thickness will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Thickness 8mm behind tip: .60-.70mm*

*This variance is due to adjustments made based on playing characteristics of the reed. Requests for a specific thickness will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Thickness at center of tip: a "chisel tip" is created at the very edge of the tip for response reasons. Thus, the tip is as thin as possible at the very edge.
